Alone Through Life
Somebody To Love
A few days ago, someone said to me, "Everyone loves someone."
At the time, I didn't really know how to respond, because my brain was in the midst of tilting left, and I was trying to balance the little gyroscope in my head back to centre.
This morning, I woke up with that thought creeping back in my semi-consciousness.
Does everyone really love someone?
The notion that there are people out there without someone to love seems pretty bleak, but to be honest, I think it is quite possible that such a notion might be true. Some people may not have someone to love.
Now, I'm wondering if the inverse could also be true.
Could there be people out there who have no one who loves them? That seems just as bleak, if not bleaker.
I've always thought that, since we are all born into some kind of family, we all have someone whom we love and who loves us, if only in the smallest way. I suppose, however, that it is possible that some people are born without a family, orphans for example, and maybe there are cases where an individual is cut loose so completely that he or she has no connection to anyone.
Hmmm ...

Hmmm ... a ponderous thought indeed ... goodness, you have got my brain analysing it all now.
ReplyDeleteTo love ... and to be loved ... I think one would have to know love ... so perhaps those who dont know love, or cannot love ... have never been loved? ... Thanks Kennedy ... I shall now be pondering this matter all day ~grin~
I'm with Lynne on this one ... a pondering I go until later, KJ.
DeleteI wonder if you need to be loved to love ... it's sort of like which comes first ... the chicken or the egg ...
DeleteBut what love is ? Is it something like an unexplainable mystery, somewhere deeper in us or... we need to learn how to love from others ?
ReplyDeleteAre you sure that family is so needed to show how to love ? What about unwanted kids? Unfortunately sometimes you can feel really lonly even if you're surrounded by family... is it love ?
I thought about that family issue when I was writing the piece. Needless to say, some families seem pretty loveless. Again, you raise the point of whether we "learn" love or if it isn't something sort of in our DNA ... I'm not sure ...
DeleteApropos questions during the time of the Thanksgiving holiday, KJ. Reading your piece, I couldn't help but think of the graduating degrees of love, which we bestow on others and which are bestowed on us by others.
ReplyDeleteSome people come to mind only once a year, such as when we see them during a holiday gathering. Then again, there may be that someone special occupying our thoughts, hour after hour, day after day. There are also those others, to which we afford graduating degrees of love and attention in our thought life, depending on their importance to us.
The favorite saying of the main character of the seventies TV show, Kojak, was "Who loves ya, baby." Whenever I'm out backpacking alone in the wilderness, I ask myself that question. For me, I can name one very special person who I know is thinking of me, right there and then, as I am thinking or her. There are others, who may be thinking of me and who are on my mind also, but to a much lesser degree, or different context. However, to know that I'm in the thoughts of this one very special person alone makes all the difference to me in the world, and keeps one foot before the other, motivating me to find my way out of the wilderness, once again.

I hadn't thought of the gradations of love. I guess it can be a sliding scale.
DeleteI like how you maintain that image of "one special person" in the day-today of your life. I think we all need a person like that, but I'm not so sure how many people have such a person. It's a blessing, Manfred.
My brother was adopted an I don't think he ever got over being abandoned. He's loved by so many. I have known people surrounded by love, but they can't see it. They think they are alone when surrounded by those who love them. I think to love ourselves gives us that ability to see the love of others for us. Just some reflection.....
ReplyDeletePs my favorite Irish author Adrian Mckinty is on here. His new crime novel is out. He blogs here. I didn't know if you knew him.
"Adrian Mckinty"
ReplyDeleteNo, that is a new name for me ... will have to check him out ... thanks.
