Five Days of Poetry — Day 4

Blowing In The Wind

The Valentine's Day Card

down the length
of a tattered postcard
he writes words
of love
not words he has
memorized and
not words he is
even used to writing
but words that flow
from his heart
and meet at some
synaptic station in his mind
where for a moment
they hesitate
like confused travellers
boarding the midnight train
and then in a flurry
of last minute excitement
the words rush through his veins
and out to his rough right hand
down through his fingertips
into the pen he holds
where his blood-red life
turns to the blue ink
forming fluid patterns
that swish and swirl
across the card
and leave just this
his Valentine's wish
a stuttering scribble of
i love you's
and uneven doodles
of almost boy-silly hearts and arrows
which immortalize the moment
until he wonders
if that is enough
then smiles the warmest smile
as he holds the card
up to the gusting west wind
and lets go

  1. What a beautiful poem!! I didn't expect the ending....how brilliant :-) Love the audio version. It is always a pleasant surprise to hear a great poet reading their own words.

    Happy Valentine's Day dear Kennedy

  2. ~chuckle~ ... my sentiments exactly! How can one possibly cram all ones love into one day ... being a daily thing its not different from all the other days ... love is many a thing ... and there are many loved within my world .....
    Happy Valentines KJ .....

    1. Oooo ... you nailed it ... you saw exactly what I was thinking ... hmmm ... too much clarity I suspect ... haha ...

Yes, love is not a card or a day, and true love needs nothing but itself ...

      Happy Valentine's Day, Lynne ...

Not too much clarity for me, KJ. Call me dense, but I'm still not sure I get it, even with an explanation. I thought it had something to do with a Valentines past, or yet to come. I guess I'm not as big a romantic at heart as I thought myself to be. Well, either that or I still need some sleep.

      It is both or neither, depending on how it interacts with your experience ... or lack of sleep ... ;o}

Romance is sworn enemy of ritual ... and having written that, I'm not sure if I have confused the matter even more ...

  5. Every day should be expressed with love and surprises are even better when not always given on an expected day.

Enjoy this Valentine's Day and all of the ones to come :)

  6. It's never enough because love is more. More than a card, a ring, a rose, a candle. Deeper than the wildest wind can touch.

    Great poem and yet...
