falling into you ...

falling into you ...
the highway winds through a desperate wilderness
and the night is a moonless black
with a darkness stretching like a sable robe
from sky to roadside misty bogs
he drives too fast
speeding past frozen trees
tires churning and spitting rubber
across uneven asphalt
each squeal and whine cracking
the midnight silence
like a soundtrack behind
the dream bubbling in his head
until at last
his senses spent and his fingers numb
his hands let go of the wheel
leaving the machine beneath him
to find its own way
across a bank of weeds
and over a rocky ledge
before crashing into finality
and in this moment as death rips through
every stitch of time both old and new
there remains a light to guide him through
and sends him falling into you

she stands on the street corner
her hands knotted and her fingers twisted
in the handles of plastic bags
fresh from the supermarket
with a week's shopping complete
and she waits for the 4:10 bus
to carry her home
to three restless children
when she feels the first pinch
that becomes a welt of pain
across her chest
and down her arms
a jolt so unforgiving
she reels from the stabbing ache
and gasps in disbelief
but she never managed another breath
as her legs buckle beneath her
and she collapses there on the sidewalk
her carefully picked apples
spilling into traffic
and in this moment as death rips through
every stitch of time both old and new
there remains a light to guide her through
and sends her falling into you

along the beach
on such a hot summer's day
the seagulls soar
squawking in shrill cries
above their heads
and while the child plays
at the water's edge
her mother sleeps on a bright red blanket
while her father reads the morning news
and in this postcard of idle disregard
no one could guess how quickly
tides can come and go
how hidden swirls of angry foam
can reach out for
the tiniest feet
and pull to sea
the innocent hope and love
of both their lives
in one instant splashing happily
and in the next instant gone
and in this moment as death rips through
every stitch of time both old and new
there remains a light so strong and true
it shows the way to falling into you
