da'Shade — White Lives Matter

Hey, what's up?

This is da'Shade ... sitting in for Kennedy James.

I been following all this protestin' stuff by black folks with regards to the "Black Lives Matter" movement.

Now, I realise that all this has to do with young black people gettin' shot and killed by white police officers. And I understand the anger that follows these events. ProPublica found that black males aged 15 to 19 were 21 times more likely to be killed by police than white males in that age group. And The Washington Post reports that unarmed black men were seven times more likely to be killed by police this year than unarmed white men.

So, yeah, I get it.

What I don't understand is why black Americans don't raise a hue and cry when young black people are shot and killed by other black people. According to 2012 FBI stats, when a black person is murdered, the perpetrator of that murder was also black 91% of the time.

So, where are the marches? Where are the protests? Where is the grandstanding media-snatch to stop black-on-black murders? It's nowhere to be seen. What the fuck? If you really cared about what's happening to black youth, you need to do something about it.

What black Americans maybe don't understand is that a large percentage of white folks really are "racists." They don't give a fuck about black culture, because white folks have a culture of their own, one that is distinct from black culture. White folks want preserve their culture as much as black folks want to preserve theirs. Nothing too unusual about that, but white folks just being white folks is somehow "racist." No one is saying that one culture is all that better than the other. The two are just different.

Get it? Different. Not the same. Not the same physically, and not the same sociologically. Never will be the same.

I get tired of one culture blaming and race-baiting another culture, saying all their inadequacies and misfortunes are a result of some kind of discrimination. Sure there's discrimination in this world, but discrimination is pretty much colour-blind. All kinds of folks are crushed by society. Ain't just a black problem. It's a multi-racial problem.

Hey, here's an idea — if yer life stinks, you might want to look inside yer own house to see where the shit lies. And when you find it, don't be running out on the street and crying, "There's shit in my house, there's shit in my house, it's discrimination, it ain't fair." Fuck, it's your shit, clean it up.

Hit that mic and try thinking a different way ...
