Breakfast Of Champions

Breakfast Of Champions

For years, I never ate breakfast ... just coffee. But people always said, "Oh, you have to eat breakfast. It's the most important meal of the day." So, now I eat breakfast, but I'm not so sure it is such an important meal.

I don't eat bacon and eggs, that traditional breakfast which has probably accounted for endless numbers of needless heart attacks. I can't imagine waking up to inject oneself with a double shot of cholesterol and a side order of trans fat.

These days, I usually have a bowl of cereal for breakfast. Plain Cheerios with milk. No banana, no blueberries, no sugar, no parsley, no garnish of any kind. How can that be the most important meal of the day?

Shouldn't I get up and eat a steak, with broccoli and salad? Turkey with mashed potatoes and cucumber slices? Fish fillets with peas and carrots?

I find food to be puzzling. I should probably buy a good book on nutrition, and follow what it says to eat.

After all, healthy body — healthy mind. Right?

Or is it the other way around? Healthy mind — healthy body.

Hmmm, now there's some food for thought ...

  1. He he he it's quite funny because polish people also believes that breakfast should be the most important meal of the day. I was never interested in eating it as a child... and right now, since few years, I take french breakfast and I'm really happy with it. Maybe you should try ?

    1. If I understand you correctly, that would be coffee and a roll or croissant, oui?

That would suit me fine, but there's not much there, nutritionally speaking ... in Canada, it translates into a workingman's breakfast — coffee and a doughnut ... no protein ...

    2. Exactly ! Fruits and simple cakes are good too !
I really think that we shouldn't force us for anything in life...

  2. According to the old maxim "Eat your breakfast alone, share part of your lunch with a friend, and give your whole dinner to your enemy", modern nutrition insists that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It triggers metabolic processes that has been slowed down during our night sleep and it stabilizes the levels of our blood sugar which regulars our appetite and energy. It has been proven that the nutrients missed at breakfast, can't be obtained with the following meals. Incoming energy in the morning improves concentration, memory and increases the efficiency of the work. I love sitting around the table with my whole family on our Sunday breakfasts and I do love getting a breakfast in bed. But it happens rare and rare, my busy mornings don't allow me to enjoy my breakfast. I think that the breakfast is about to disappear as the traditional evening walks along the promenade, which among other things have served our ancestors to facilitate their digestion.

    1. No food items should ever go near a bed ... with the one exception being whipped cream ... oh, and maybe a Snickers chocolate bar ...

  3. The last time when i was sick i got a bowl of chicken soup in my bed for breakfast. Bed is the only place to eat when you're sick. Within the snugness of my warm sheets i felt the healing taste of this soup... Too many beds are only for sleeping or for making love... i love the good Sunday morning noshings served with a sweet kiss from the current man of my life, or the late evening noshings under the covers in front of an old romantic movie.

  4. I like coffee an a breakfast bar. The big breakfast is too much first thing. I can stomach it if its more of a brunch. I do like eggs, French toast, pancakes , etc. mom was big on us not leaving unless we had toast. I'd have a bite an fly out the door. My kids are the same. Lol.

    1. My family always had a stack of toast as well ... these days, I do like toast with real, 100% peanut, peanut butter on it, but like you, that's usually more around lunchtime.

  5. I like eating fruity oatmeal and a bagel or English muffin, for breakfast. I think the most important meal is lunch because that's when I get the hungriest.

  6. Unless my day is started with at least two mugs of coffee, its not worth starting it at all ... I dont usually eat anything until about eleven-ish ... then its usually fruit ... or toast!
I think the importance of breakfast is not so much as what you eat, but that you break the fast!!! Fruit is believed to be the best thing to kick start the system. The most important meal for me is supper ... its family time.

    1. Fruit is too sweet for me first thing in the morning, but you're right about just being sure to break the fast ... like you, I love my morning coffee ...

  7. Before I quit smoking 7 1/2 years ago, the mere thought of having anything more than coffee at breakfast would make me want to puke. Since quitting smoking, I could eat carrion for breakfast, alongside the hyenas and vultures.

    1. Haha ... I have heard that quitting makes quite a difference in one's life ... alas, I am not there yet ...

  8. Some mornings I don't eat breakfast, and other mornings I might have toast or cereal. Something I enjoy (now and then) is eating breakfast foods for dinner. I don't know if this comes with age, but the older I've gotten the less hungry I've become.

As for eating in bed ... that depends on what is being served.
